Lyrics

Let me tell a story
For I really can’t ignore
The happenings in Leicestershire
In 1984
Two thousand and five hundred
Walked across that picket line
But a tiny band of miners
Would not go into the mine

They were called The Dirty Thirty
So they wore that name with pride
As the only striking miners
They stood against the tide
And if you call them heroes
They would surely disagree
But The Dirty Thirty and their kin
Are all heroes to me

The railwaymen at Coalville
They backed the miners too
And when a coal train came along
They would not let it through
And the women they were mighty
Maybe mightier than the men
They suffered so much hardship
But they’d do it all again

They were called The Dirty Thirty
So they wore that name with pride
As the only striking miners
They stood against the tide
And if you call them heroes
They would surely disagree
But The Dirty Thirty and their kin
Are all heroes to me

So here’s to Malcom Pinnegar
Or “Benny” to his friends
Who led the Dirty Thirty
Till the strike came to an end
And here’s to all the other lads
So principled and true
And those who stood beside them
As a worker’s meant to do

They were called The Dirty Thirty
So they wore that name with pride
As the only striking miners
They stood against the tide
And if you call them heroes
They would surely disagree
But The Dirty Thirty and their kin
Are all heroes to me

Wow Al! Great lyrics, wonderful tune – I believe if I wasn’t firmly planted in my seat, I would have gotten up to dance along! Next time, perhaps I shall, haha!

Thanks Jann. Play it again, and this time dance. Even if firmly planted.

Great stuff Alun. I had a dirty thirty poster for years, but it’s now stuck on the ceiling of me brother’s cabin on Vancouver Island. Great, positive tune and a timely reminder.

What a brilliant song Alun, Hope you will sing it when you come down South.
Do you go to the Tolpuddle Rally.

Janet, I will definitely be singing it when I come down South. I love singing it and love spreading the message. I’ve played Tolpuddle before but would love to play it again.

John, get your brother to take a photo of the poster for us.

    Chris, thanks for your message.

Thanks for the kind comments all.

Ian, feel free to share, that would be great.

Enjoy the gala. Maybe you could persuade some of the galas to have me come along and perform the song for you all? That would be fab!
