New Song: We Are Not Afraid
I sung this song for the first time during my headline set at Hove Folk Club on Friday.
But I wrote it on the way to the Sophie Lancaster gig at the end of last month.
Sophie was murdered because she dressed like a goth. No other reason.
Her friends and family have set up the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. It campaigns against prejudice, hatred and intolerance everywhere.
Thinking of Sophie made me think of how we police each other into conformity.
It also made me think of the fact that Sophie lived her life with courage and pride in who she was. That she allowed herself to express her identity how she felt most comfortable.
We should all take Sophie’s lesson. Throw aside the false conformity we allow ourselves to be hemmed into. Let’s be brave enough to be proud of the real us!

The song, We Are Not Afraid, is shown below in the dimly lit room of the wonderful Hove Folk Club.
