New Song: The Fruits of Apartheid
Lyrics
The things you have grown with stolen water
Are rotting are rotting are rotting away
For we will not purchase the fruits of apartheid
They’re rotting, they’re rotting, they’re rotting
They’re rotting, they’re rotting away
Imagine the green in these fields so fallow
Imagine the life flooding back to the land
Imagine the harvest being gathered a-plenty
Imagine the water-taps turning at thirst’s sweet command
Each barren acre and well that runs dry
Has our attention, we will not pass by
So the…
Things you have grown with stolen water
Are rotting are rotting are rotting away
For we will not purchase the fruits of apartheid
They’re rotting, they’re rotting, they’re rotting
They’re rotting, they’re rotting away
Imagine the sound of the skies filled with birdsong
Imagine the children where soldiers once stood
Imagine two peoples united in friendship
With all subjugation
Forever behind them
Apartheid discarded for good
Each stone in your wall and each word in your lie
We see beyond, and we will not stand by
So the…
Things you have grown with stolen water
Are rotting are rotting are rotting away
For we will not purchase the fruits of apartheid
They’re rotting, they’re rotting, they’re rotting
They’re rotting, they’re rotting away
Background
When I was in my teens I ensured that no South African products entered our house. I’ve always been a passionate opponent of apartheid.
I oppose it once more today. Only this time it is the people of Palestine who are under apartheid’s heel.
The issue of water apartheid in particular is striking, as highlighted by recent reports by Amnesty International and others.
Amnesty reported that Israel is denying Palestinians access to even the basic minimum of clean, safe water.
Even the World Bank reported that Palestinians get only a quarter of the water that Israelis have access to.
In September 2009 the TUC voted to back a boycott of goods produced in Israeli settlements in the illegally occupied territories.
The song is in solidarity with the people of Palestine. Thanks to Dee Coombes who contacted me seeking a song on the issue of the boycott.
It’s newly written so it may look a little different by the time I’m performing it on stage.
